Someday, people will want to compose epic ballads about my life. When they finally get down to it, I figured a blog like this one would make good reference material.
Perhaps, in the extravagance
of youth, we give away our devotions easily and all but arbitrarily, on the mistaken assumption that we’ll always have more to give." - Michael Cunningham

It's that time of the year again...
I have always had conflicted feelings when tasked with the burden of voting my peers into positions of 'power' and 'prestige'. On the one hand, with a friend in the running, and horror stories about this year's unreasonable campaign schedule having reached my ear, the sacrifices that these candidates have made for my vote are not lost on me. I admire their dedication, and appreciate all the thought and hard work that has gone into their election campaigns. I understand that this election is no laughing matter to them. I understand and yet on the other hand, the whole situation still strikes me as farcical. In my defense, I feel I can hardly be blamed. Not when every day I am subject to all the hype and the endless barrage of tacky posters, cheesy taglines, and cheap publicity gimmicks, that bring me no closer to an informed decision even after careful inspection. Is it any wonder the elections have oft been likened to something as frivolous as a popularity contest? I thought about this a little deeper before it struck me; at the heart of this apparent contradiction is not the electoral system in place but the (non-)sensibilities of the campaigners themselves. Why dilute the core message of your campaign with meaningless catchphrases? Why hide your sincerity behind a glittering artifice? Spare me your clever puns, your contrived acronyms, your pop culture references, and clearly communicate to me what your campaign is about, what you being in such a position of power would mean for you and for me. Come up to me and tell me why I should vote for you. It's really that simple. |
